The Little Things That Help a Maine Coon Kitten Become Your Best Friend

There is something special about bringing a Maine Coon kitten into your home. Those big paws, fluffy coat, curious eyes, and gentle personality can make it easy to fall in love at first sight.

But becoming your kitten’s best friend is about more than feeding them, buying toys, or giving them a comfortable place to sleep. The strongest bond is built through dozens of small moments that happen every day.

Your kitten learns to trust you through the way you speak, play, handle, feed, and simply spend time with them.

Here are some of the little things that can turn those first days together into the beginning of a beautiful lifelong friendship.

1. Let Your Maine Coon Kitten Come to You

When a kitten arrives in a new home, everything is unfamiliar—the smells, sounds, rooms, people, and routines.

It can be tempting to pick up your new kitten constantly because you are excited to have them around. Instead, give them opportunities to approach you on their own.

Sit quietly nearby. Talk softly. Let your kitten sniff your hand before petting them.

When your kitten chooses to walk toward you, climb onto your lap, or curl up beside you, you are teaching them something important: being close to you is safe and comfortable.

Those quiet moments can become the foundation of trust.

2. Talk to Your Kitten

Your Maine Coon may not understand every word you say, but they can become familiar with your voice.

Talk to your kitten while you prepare their food. Say good morning when you wake up. Tell them what you are doing while you go about your day.

A calm, gentle voice can become one of the familiar sounds your kitten associates with home.

Over time, you may even notice your kitten responding to certain words, tones, or their own name.

3. Make Playtime About More Than Toys

Play is one of the easiest ways to build a relationship with a kitten.

Use interactive toys such as wand toys, balls, or other safe toys that allow you to participate in the game. Instead of simply leaving toys on the floor, spend time playing together.

Your kitten learns that you are the source of fun and attention.

Maine Coon kittens are curious and intelligent, so changing up playtime can keep things interesting. A few short, engaging play sessions can be more valuable than one long session.

And remember: allow your kitten to catch the toy sometimes. A successful "hunt" can make play more satisfying.

4. Learn Your Kitten's Favorite Kind of Affection

Not every kitten enjoys affection in exactly the same way.

Some love sitting on laps. Others prefer lying beside you. One kitten may enjoy gentle chin scratches while another prefers being stroked along the back.

Pay attention to your kitten's body language.

If they lean into your hand, purr, relax, or remain close, they may be enjoying the interaction. If they pull away, flatten their ears, tense their body, or try to leave, give them some space.

Respecting those little signals teaches your kitten that you listen to them.

That can make your relationship stronger over time.

5. Create a Routine

Kittens thrive when life feels predictable.

Try to keep important parts of the day reasonably consistent, including meals, playtime, quiet time, and bedtime.

A familiar routine helps your kitten understand what to expect.

Eventually, your Maine Coon may begin reminding you when it is time for dinner or play!

These predictable daily interactions also give you regular opportunities to strengthen your bond.

6. Give Them a Safe Place to Retreat

Even the most affectionate kitten needs somewhere they can go when they want peace and quiet.

A comfortable bed, cat tree, covered space, or quiet corner can give your kitten a place to relax.

Don't follow them every time they retreat.

Giving your kitten the freedom to walk away—and knowing you will respect that choice—can actually help them feel more confident around you.

A kitten that feels safe is often more willing to explore, play, and seek affection.

7. Use Gentle Handling

Maine Coon kittens grow into large cats, so becoming comfortable with gentle handling early in life can be helpful.

Gradually introduce your kitten to being touched around areas such as their paws, ears, and mouth, always keeping the experience calm and positive.

This can also make future grooming and routine care easier.

Keep sessions short and stop if your kitten becomes uncomfortable. The goal isn't to force cooperation; it is to help your kitten learn that handling can be a normal and safe part of life.

8. Make Grooming a Bonding Ritual

That beautiful Maine Coon coat needs regular attention.

Rather than treating brushing as a chore, turn it into quality time together.

Start slowly with short sessions. Let your kitten investigate the brush. Offer gentle strokes and praise when they remain relaxed.

As your kitten becomes accustomed to grooming, those sessions can become a familiar ritual between the two of you.

A quiet brushing session can eventually become one of those peaceful moments your cat associates with you.

9. Give Your Kitten One-on-One Time

Your kitten doesn't need your attention every minute of the day.

But they do benefit from knowing that there are moments when they have your undivided attention.

Put your phone away for a few minutes. Sit on the floor with your kitten. Play with them. Talk to them. Let them climb beside you.

You don't need to do anything extraordinary.

Sometimes ten minutes of genuine attention means more than an entire afternoon of being in the same room while you are busy with other things.

10. Never Underestimate the Power of a Treat

Food can be a useful way to create positive associations, particularly when teaching your kitten that certain experiences are safe and rewarding.

Small, appropriate treats can be offered during training, grooming, or after positive interactions.

But treats don't have to be the main language of your relationship.

Your kitten should also learn that your voice, your presence, playtime, and affection are rewarding.

The goal is to build a relationship—not simply create a cat who follows the treat bag.

11. Be Patient When Your Kitten Makes Mistakes

Kittens are curious.

They will climb things, knock objects over, chase moving feet, investigate places they shouldn't, and occasionally make a spectacular mess.

Instead of reacting with fear or anger, redirect them toward something appropriate whenever possible.

Your kitten is learning how the world works.

Patience helps them learn without making you someone they need to fear.

12. Give Them Time to Grow Into Their Personality

One of the most wonderful things about raising a Maine Coon is watching their personality develop.

Your tiny kitten will change as they grow. The shy kitten may become adventurous. The quiet kitten may become talkative. The independent kitten may eventually become your constant companion.

Don't rush the process.

Get to know the individual cat in front of you, rather than expecting them to behave exactly like the Maine Coon you've seen online.

Their unique personality is part of what will make your relationship special.

The Best Friend Is Built in the Little Moments

Your Maine Coon kitten probably won't become your best friend because of one big gesture.

It happens gradually.

It happens when you sit beside them while they nap.

When you hear their little footsteps coming toward you.

When they look at you before jumping onto your lap.

When they bring you a toy.

When they greet you after you've been away.

When they choose to sleep near you because they feel safe.

These tiny moments may seem ordinary, but they are how a relationship grows.

Feed them. Play with them. Listen to them. Respect their boundaries. Talk to them. Be patient with them. And most importantly, show up for them every day.

Your Maine Coon kitten doesn't need a perfect owner.

They need someone they can trust.

And with time, patience, and plenty of little moments together, that tiny bundle of fur may become not just your pet, but one of your very best friends.
